He creates a powerful clay figure\, the Golem\, based on an ancient legend\, and breathes life into it with magical powers. The Golem saves the emperor’s life\, and the emperor revokes his decree to expel the Jews from the city. The Golem has essentially fulfilled its purpose\, but when Löw’s assistant uses it to combat a rival\, the Golem goes on a rampage\, setting the city on fire.
