She escapes the marriage only in stolen glances and secret moments with Bertram, while Anton worships her as the model for his Madonna sculpture. In desperation, Ursula turns to a wandering monk and begs for poison \u2014 allegedly for a joint suicide with Bertram. The monk, grown suspicious, swaps the poison for a harmless substance and warns the city.<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">When Anton learns of the secret love, he storms home. Ursula mixes the powder into his water, but Anton sees her in the mirror \u2014 and dies of shock before taking a single sip. The crowd screams for vengeance. The monk testifies that the powder was harmless, but that night the crucifix in the cathedral weeps tears of blood. The people demand the judgment of God: a trial by fire. Bertram offers to walk through the flames in Ursula&#8217;s place. But in the final hour, Ursula recognizes her true guilt \u2014 not in the poison, but in the betrayal of the heart. She herself steps into the fire, and on the other side awaits her not the cross, but the smiling figure of her dead husband, who leads her safely through the flames.<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"\">About the Film<\/h3>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" dir=\"auto\">Director Victor Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m created with <em>The Outlaw and His Wife<\/em> one of the most visually stunning films in Swedish cinema history. The screenplay was written by Hjalmar Bergman, one of the most significant authors of Swedish modernism. The cinematography by Julius Jaenzon and the revolutionary dissolving techniques \u2014 later known as the &#8220;Scandinavian dissolve&#8221; \u2014 created an imagery of unparalleled density and symbolic power. Leading actress Jenny Hasselqvist shone as Ursula, alongside Ivan Hedqvist as Master Anton and G\u00f6sta Ekman as Bertram. <em>The Outlaw and His Wife<\/em> premiered in 1922 and was released internationally under the titles <em>Love&#8217;s Crucible<\/em> and <em>Mortal Clay<\/em>.
