Plot

The General is an action-comedy film from 1926, written, directed, and starring Buster Keaton. The film is set during the American Civil War and is based on the historically documented Andrews Raid of April 12, 1862. The train engineer Johnnie Gray embarks on a lonely pursuit of his locomotive, “The General,” which has been stolen by Union spies. Through perseverance, daring maneuvers, and inventive thinking, he manages to reclaim both his train and the affections of his beloved Annabelle Lee. The General is considered one of the most significant comedies in film history.
