The General is a 1926 action-comedy film directed by and starring Buster Keaton. Set during the American Civil War, the film is based on the historically documented Andrews Raid of April 12, 1862. The locomotive engineer Johnny Gray embarks on a daring solo mission to retrieve his stolen locomotive, General, which was taken by Union spies. With persistence, daring maneuvers, and inventive tricks, he manages to reclaim both his train and the love of his sweetheart, Annabelle Lee. The General is regarded as one of the greatest comedies in film history.
