Action
This spectacular and opulent epic film has everything a romantic or adventurer could desire: love, drama, jealousy, daring action in the Indian jungle (filmed near Berlin — and so spectacular at the time that even President Friedrich Ebert came to see), tiger enclosures (with people inside who definitely don’t belong there…), crocodiles attacking unfortunate servants, men ranging from suave to vengeful, and women from desperate to recklessly brave…
Musical Score
New musical score by Wilfried Kaets for simultaneous piano, cinema organ, Indian percussion (tam-tam, gongs, cymbals), and electronic soundscapes.
The music serves as a homage to the contemporary musical styles of the silent film era.
It plays with elements of Indian music, not in authentic form, but as a reflection of the exoticized European view from the early 20th century. The score connects scenes and content along the film’s dramatic structure, but avoids simply mirroring the visuals, instead aiming to create a balance between old imagery and new music using modern compositional methods.
