Murnau’s film, which unfolds almost entirely without intertitles, is considered a milestone in film history and a peak of German silent cinema.
In short:
Tom, the son of a farmer, meets a beautiful young woman in the city who dreams of a life in the countryside. Against the wishes of his extremely authoritarian father, Tom brings the young waitress back to the farm as his wife. However, tensions rise as Tom’s father treats the lively newcomer as an intruder, and the farmhands begin to covet her. The atmosphere becomes increasingly unbearable, leading inexorably to disaster on a dramatic stormy night…
