“Unheimliche Geschichten” (Eerie Tales) from 1919 is the very first German horror anthology film. It features the “Trio Infernal” of German silent cinema: Anita Berber, Conrad Veidt, and Reinhold Schünzel. Dressed as Prostitute, Death, and Devil, they scour an antiquarian bookshop at midnight looking for film material: five one-act plays, five sinister tales involving dubious husbands, lost hands, and mysterious houses.
