In short:
Based on themes from Goethe’s classic, Murnau’s Faust tells the story of the titular scholar who is tempted by the devil Mephisto. To lure the aging Faust, Mephisto brings a plague upon the land; as the dying plead for help and Faust’s prayers go unanswered, he turns to the devil for aid. To win him over, Mephisto offers Faust eternal youth and all the riches of the world. Faust accepts the pact and sells his soul. But when he falls in love with the young and innocent Gretchen—ultimately bringing tragedy upon her—he begins to question the bargain he has made with the devil.
